NOVEMBER GARDENER
Whv do some people wrap tree
trunks in the fall?
Many gardeners apply paper tree wrap,
above,
or flexible plastic coils
in the fall to guard tree trunks against winter damage from sun scald
and frost cracks. Young trees, notably maples, as well as those with
smooth bark such as some cherry and crabapple varieties, are
susceptible in cold climates. Be sure to remove wraps by Easter.
Wraps and coils are available at many garden centers in fall.
FILE IT AWAY
Make your investment in
garden tools pay off for years
by keeping them clean and in
good repair. When fall chores
are done, clean your garden
tools and sharpen the blades
with a file,
above.
Apply
mineral oil or clean motor oil
to wooden handles, and store
tools in a dry place. In spring,
you’ll be set to go.
